S/V Sweet Ruca is a 2000 J/46 sailboat currently exploring the world under sail.
The adventure began in January 2019 when Curtis spotted Sweet Ruca online and, in less than 24 hours, placed the winning bid. What started as an impulse quickly became a life-changing decision. After purchasing the boat, Curtis sold his house, left Ohio, and moved aboard in Rhode Island in July 2019 with the goal of sailing around the world.
A lifelong sailor and entrepreneur, Curtis has spent decades racing sailboats, building businesses, and working in the marine industry. While Sweet Ruca was originally purchased as an offshore cruising platform, she has remained true to her performance roots, combining competitive sailing with long-distance passagemaking and adventure.
Since departing the United States, Sweet Ruca has crossed oceans, rounded Cape Horn, explored remote islands, and visited some of the most spectacular places on Earth. Along the way, the journey has evolved from a simple sailing adventure into a lifestyle centered around exploration, self-reliance, technology, and the pursuit of freedom.
What began as a personal dream has grown into a global community of sailors, dreamers, and adventurers following along from around the world. Through blogs, videos, and social media, Sweet Ruca shares the realities of life offshore—the challenges, triumphs, boat projects, ocean passages, and unforgettable moments that come with living aboard and exploring the planet by sail.
Whether you’re here for sailing, travel, offshore passagemaking, boat refits, technology, or simply to follow the adventure, welcome aboard Sweet Ruca.
