S/V Sweet Ruca is a year 2000 J/46 Sailboat. Our crew consists of Kate, Curtis, and Roxy the dog. One day we woke up, saw a boat on the internet, and in less than 24 hours had the winning bid. Kate and I purchased the boat in January of 2019 with the intent to refit her and sail her around the world. We sold our house, left Ohio, and moved onto the boat in Rhode Island in July.
We met while racing Melges 24 sailboats seven years ago. Since then we have dreampt about doing this and now it is finally becoming a reality. Kate is a middle school World Language teacher, Curtis is an entrepreneur. Both are fairly accomplished racing sailors, but have cruised little. Last year in August we borrowed a friends racing J/105 and spent two weeks cruising from Harbor Springs, MI, through the North Channel of Canada (northern Lake Huron), and back to Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit. This trip sold us on the lifestyle, but we couldnt find the boat that checked all the boxes.
When we found the J/46 it was almost like it was built for us and meant to be. We jumped at the chance and went all-in. When our friends heard what we were doing, everyone wanted to follow along. We hope you enjoy our blogs, videos, and social medial posts as we share our adventure with you!

Support our journey and content creation by purchasing the small book we wrote, “Sharing The Journey.” In the book you can find all the details about how we grew up, why we became sailors, what we did before we left, how we met, and how we made the decision to sell it all and buy a boat to sail around the world.
