After being offshore, sailing in the blue water on a fast 2 day reach from the USVI to Grenada, we arrive and spend almost a fortnight in quarantine.

In this satisfying video, we do some sailing, but you get to see a lot of us making funny videos while stuck on the boat for over a week at anchor. You know what’s awesome about being at anchor in for that long?

There is no CNN, no MSNBC, no Fox News, no parties, no drama. It’s just the two of us and the asmr sounds of the ocean and birds, Kate playing beautiful music as she is learning the guitar, and enjoying sunsets and nature.

We have a smooth sail and show the checking in the process via MAYAG into Grenada. It was overall a good and motivational experience! (A note, now you need to use SailClear).

This satisfying video is action-packed with sailboats, sailing action, scuba diving, and great music. Our favorite part is the boat tour of the Seventy 7 Lagoon sailing catamaran, truly a yacht! We had to pause our around the world voyage in the USVI due to the border closures in the Azores. We wanted to be doing a transatlantic passage at this time, but we made the best of it by hanging out with cruising and charter catamarans in the crystal clear blue waters of STX (St. Croix, USVI).

Come sail away with us to the island of St. Croix where we travel away from our feelings and have a little vacation from life on the boat. Located in the US Virgin Islands, STX is the largest but least visited of the islands in the USVI.

This is a particularly satisfying video for us as we tackle some relationship issues brought about by tiny house living and the digital nomad lifestyle. Our sailboat is our tiny home, and a sail life is what we live as we create and share our video travel vlog. We are re-learning how to sail and be at sea together during the quarantine lockdown.

Special Appearances: SV Liberty – Bimini Charters Ashley & Nills http://www.biminisailingcharters.com

We met Ashley and Nills near Peter Island in the BVI. We went through a bit of lockdown time as boat neighbors. We didn’t wear masks, as we both knew we had been quarantined for more than 14 days. They run a sailing charter on their 44′ Lagoon 440 Catamaran, normally out of the BVI, but since the pandemic, they have relocated to Key West, Florida and Maine. If you are there, tell them Sweet Ruca says hello! Thanks for the great dinner guys!

In this episode we continue to explore the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. We have some ups and downs this time. We make a few mistakes, but quickly figure out how to fix them.

Our first hiccup, we forgot we had a fishing line out, and as we set our anchor we ran over it, fouling it in the propeller. Kate had to dive on it to untangle it. Luckily the water was warm and calm. Roxy the sailing dog supervised the work 🙂

It is still Christmas time in the Caribbean, so we head out and explore the town near Hatchet Bay, a well known hurricane hole. You could surely weather a storm in that harbor. We found a local bar and after a few beers made some new friends. They took us on a tour of the town for a Boxing Day celebration.

While we were here we did a much needed oil changes to our Yanmar 4JH3-TE 75hp Turbocharged Diesel Engine.

Next we were off to meet up with out friends aboard SV Sargo for a floating dock party, snorkeling, and sundowners.

Lastly we were off to Rock Sound. It was a beautiful day for sailing. We tried to get a nice photo shoot in. Sargo found an uncharted blue hole on the way, which we stopped and dove with them. Inside we found sharks! Our first time in the water and swimming with sharks.

After cooling off we finished the trip by sailing around Rock Sound. We noticed less power and some extra smoke from our Yanmar engine though. It was time to investigate. Finally, after exhausting all the options, we found the issue was a small engine mounted fuel filter. What could have been a 5 minute fix cost us days of downtime.

The downtime was OK though. This gave us a chance to reprovision, relax, and make a YouTube sailing vlog video.

Next we get ready to sail nonstop from the Bahamas to the USVI and BVI. We hope you enjoyed this episode. Please subscribe, share, and hit the like button 🙂

After a major refit, we set sail on a dark, rainy, and cold evening from Annapolis with the Goal of being in the Bahamas for Thanksgiving. We don’t make it in one shot and detour to Cape Fear, North Carolina, before heading out to sea again to rip through the Gulf Stream in 22-35 knots of breeze where Kate fights seasicknesses.

0:00 Annapolis

We start out this youtube sailing video where the last one left off. We left the dock at Bert Jabins in Annapolis, Marlyand in the cold November rain! We had a deadline though, our goal was to be at anchor in the warm, clear blue waters of the Bahamas to celebrate Thanksgiving.

0:31 Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake Bay was a mess on the way out. We dodged fishing gear and huge cargo ships and freighters as we motored upwind to make our weather window. The next morning we were sailing, almost to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. After months of being coupled up in a boatyard, we have finally headed to sea again. We raised our sails and reached down the coast, headed toward Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

1:19 Cape Hatteras

Late that leaving, or should we say early the next morning, we rounded Cape Hatteras in the dark. We dealt with the choppy and confused seas driving at weird angles by the relentless current. We made it through, rounding America’s Great Cape at roughly 2:00 AM. The next morning, as if to celebrate our achievement, we were greeted by dolphins swimming off of our bow. Our first Bow Dolphins on Sweet Ruca!!!

4:20 Dolphins & Fishing for Mahi Mahi

After we crossed into the Gulf Stream the next morning the conditions subsided. And, at times even went to flat calm. We decided to do some fishing and nailed our first Mahi Mahi. Thankful to the gods of the sea for the fabulous dinner. Fish tacos for days!

7:34 Cape Fear, North Carolina

After our first offshore fishing experience, we saw the weather was shifting. To get ahead of it, and make some time in the calm, we decided to tack back to shore and head to Cape Fear, NC. A wonderful little town on the Intercoastal Waterway. We stayed the night and re-filled with diesel and icecream!

8:33 Gulf Stream in Big Breeze

We headed back out to do battle with the Gulf Stream once more. It was the only thing left between us and warm weather. The problem was, the wind was blowing from the direction we wanted to go. We saw big breeze up to 35 knots and Kate experienced a bout of seasickness as we had spray into the cockpit.

12:21 The Morning After

We made it through, but we weren’t to the Bahamas just yet. The trip would continue. We show you what the inside of the boat looks the morning after bashing into big seas offshore. Bluewater sailing at its best. Kate talks about her seasickness and Curtis is having fun discussing autopilot. He is really happy he is finally wearing shorts, a sign we are sailing closer to the Caribbean!

There have been a lot of firsts in our experiences aboard SV Sweet Ruca. Coming from the racing world we know a bit about sailing, but maintaining the boat has become our full time job. Preparing for a regatta gives you some time on land to organize and prepare yourself with endless resources just an Amazon click or a car trip to West Marine away. Preparing your cruising boat to move to a new port requires problem solving and constant attention, often with a lack of Internet service and supplies.

Perhaps our favorite phrase we’ve learned is: “Cruising is just boat work in beautiful places”. It’s hard to summarize this experience in one phrase, but we are hoping to share this experience with you in the convenient form of video. Recording video for you allows you to live in the moment and see our “boat work in beautiful places” as we do.

The boat was purchased at the beginning of 2019 and made her quick launch in July. We have been cruising and refitting her ever since! Because we’ve had a lot of “firsts” and learning to do, we have been putting video editing on the back burner. We plan to post videos of our journey in the truest form so that you may live vicariously through our adventures and get a taste of the highs and lows of cruising life.

It would mean the world to us if you could share our experience as we hope to educate and inform and overall just LIVE in this crazy world with you all. The experience means so much more if we are able to bring you all along, so please reach out to us, like, share, and subscribe to our videos. The world is our home now, so don’t be a stranger!

Love SV Sweet Ruca
